Declan Rice future remains unclear
After an excellent start of the season with West Ham, the future of Declan Rice has become unclear as the player continues to wait to make a decision on his International future.
Martin O’Neil remained confident that Declan Rice would recommit for Ireland despite the player not playing in the last two International breaks.
“I’ve spoken to Declan and his family, they want a little more time to make their minds up and I’m comfortable with that. He hasn’t chosen anyone yet,” said O’Neil
Moments after the press conference Sky reported that Rice had chosen to play for his birth country of England a story they later changed to state that he would favor playing for England. When approached by journalists about the story on his way out of the press conference Martin O’Neil said “I would be a bit surprised at this minute”.
England manager Gareth Southgate later told Talksport that there has been no update on Rice’s situation since last months discussions.
“There’s no update from our side on that so, yeah, I guess we’ll know when we know,” said Southgate
O’Neil also announced his provisional squad for the upcoming international break. Ireland will be hoping to get their first win in the Nations League when they play Denmark at the Aviva on Saturday 13 October and Wales three days later on the 16th.
